G8-G20 victim

A Toronto fast food vendor proudly displays his Canadian maple leaf flag from a hockey stick. This is his regular spot, right next to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (on right), where the 2010 G20 Conference will be held on June 26 and June 27.

When I took this shot in early May, I wasn't thinking of the G8/G20 Circus, I mean Summit, that'll be taking place at this exact spot in June. But as I was going through my images the other day, it occurred to me that this guy, along with tens of thousands of others who live and work near here, will very soon be expected to make some heavy sacrifices. To keep protestors away from the summit venue, the entire area will be fenced off to exclude all civilians. The surrounding downtown core will also be a restricted area. Total cost for security to protect the heads of government and heads of state at both the Toronto G20 and the 36th G8 Summit at nearby Huntsville is estimated to be at least $1 billion. Yes, that's right $1 BILLION - $US! Meanwhile, this vendor, as well as all businesses in the affected areas will not be compensated for lost income.

Come on, it's 2010! Is it not possible to have these world leaders meet by teleconference? Then maybe our lives wouldn't be disrupted by this ridiculous event - and the $1B could be better spent on more worthy causes.
