Panic

After I had gone around the block and gotten back onto Queen St. West, several times the police charged bystanders (and a few protesters) at times while people were singing "O Canada" - of course, because the crowd was peaceful and non-combative any time the police rushed forward people panicked. This was shot as I was running away from Queen St. West and Spadina Ave. after an unannounced surge at the crowd.
Personally, I thought they had bought those fancy sound cannons for moments such as this: to tell people to move back. I didn't even see them use a megaphone - let alone a sound cannon.

Brown Noser

I'm trying not to be judgmental - and I think I understand the context of this fellow's stance. However, after the events that I witnessed tonight - in person and on the news - I can't help but to think that this is what kids who remind teachers to assign homework look like when they grow up.
My goal this week has been to document whatever I could about the G20 summit's effects on our streets - while trying to stay unbiased.
I'll admit that's been difficult. On principle, I support the protesters rights to voice opinion and march in the streets. Likewise, I support the police in keeping potentially dangerous people away from the G20 summit.
That being said, what transpired today was shameful because the police did not react - they instigated. Their instigation caused hundreds of bystanders and documentarians such as myself to be detained against their will in torrential rain for over 3 hours.
While I couldn't witness Saturday's events unfold in person - I believe that the whole G20 security initiative was embarrassed: multiple cop cars set ablaze, many violent protesters unpunished, a city that they were entrusted to protect was left in ruins.
Today was nothing more than redemption. When the government spends 1 billion dollars in tax payer money for security purposes, it needs to show that money was well spent - that's all today was. Hundreds of innocent bystanders were treated like disobedient cattle: rounded up, and shipped out. All that was missing was actual branding.
It is for this reason that I censored this asskisser's face - I figured I should save him the embarrassment.

Plan B
dav foto corp. has added a photo to the pool:
As soon as we got to the intersection of Queen St. West and Spadina I took notice of the horses... it's obvious that the police were waiting for the march and were just waiting to divide and conquer. This would have been fine and dandy if over 80% of the crowd they were about to encircle weren't regular joe's.

Feeling Optimistic

At Queen St. West and Bay St. This gentleman was kind enough to sing to bystanders. He was one of the few bright spots in an overall gloomy day.

Blue Line

After exiting their Greyhounds, the riot cops started marching southbound on Spadina. Behind the police, about 6 empty streetcars which had been stuck in traffic for over 40 minutes. Eventually the streetcars reversed north.

Higher Ground – Queen St. West & Spadina
dav foto corp. has added a photo to the pool:
Those of us who were far enough north on Spadina were given an option to get out of the intersection - I proceeded through a small street to try and make my way onto Queen again - along the way there was an opportunity for a higher vantage point. While it made for a decent shot, at this point I could not tell what had happened to the folks at the intersection.

Two By Two

...march the boys and girls in blue.
After the police had stalled the westbound protest on Queen St. West, they called in reinforcements. 2 Greyhound buses came down Spadina Ave. and out popped a field trip of riot cops - these officers would eventually go south along Spadina to seal off any possible exit the crowd at the intersection had if they wanted to go northbound.
